Our industry has really not changed all that much over the years.During the late 1970’s you might be surprised to learn that among the major full service hotel companies, Hilton & Sheraton reached their peak in size and dominance.Hilton actually had more hotel rooms in Chicago (6,000 plus) than Marriott had hotel rooms in the late 70’s.The majority of these properties were large, 1,200 to 2,000 room convention hotels with few amenities offered other than those aimed at the meeting and convention planner and attendee’s.Then the explosion of the smaller properties begun to crop up,like the Rosewood Collection, the Four4 Seasons and on and on.These properties largely geared themselves to the needs of the individual, offering amenities based on what we like to call Location or Property driven amenities, or a combination of both. The resort and boutique properties were born.Butler service, spas, high-end restaurants and the like bloomed.
Also during this time the all-suite, free continental breakfast, limited service, but we are not really limited properties begun to proliferate. Then the Social Media overwhelmed us which effected every type of operation and if you didn’t climb on board, the “your operation was doomed” scenario begun spreading.But, when you look back through the years, has it really changed all that much. We have always had the fancy Chateaus, the massive downtown properties geared to handling the railroad and airline business and the small country Bed and Breakfasts.
But through all these subtle changes our industry still remains one of Personal Service. Certain improved levels of personal service can be drummed into our employee’s through extensive training programs and stringent standards enforcement, but the truth remains, most of our employees who provide the highest, most memorable levels of service, well, it just comes natural to them and you could say “ they were born with it”.
